The Pan American Health Organisation has said that over one billion individuals worldwide now live with hypertension.

According to PAHO, hypertension has become the main cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death around the world.

PAHO stated this in its message to commemorate the 2022 World Hypertension Day.

It noted that the impact of the disease is now immensely felt in low and middle-income countries, where two-thirds of cases are discovered, mainly as a result of increased risk factors in those populations in recent decades.

The 2022 World Hypertension Day is themed: ‘Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer.’

The Day is celebrated annually on May 17 to raise awareness and promote hypertension by encouraging individuals to measure their blood pressure.

PAHO said hypertension is a major cause of premature death.

It noted that nearly 1.13 billion individuals across the world are presently living with high blood pressure, adding that most people with hypertension are unaware of their condition.

The WHO says its target is to lessen the occurrence of hypertension by 25 per cent by 2025 globally.

To achieve this, the WHO and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016, launched the Global Hearts Initiative.

The initiative aims to achieve better heart health around the world and also, to provide guidance on more efficient ways of detecting and treating patients suffering from hypertension in primary health care.
