EPL: Referees explain latest decision on VAR

by James Davies

The technical director of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, Howard Webb has explained the latest addition to match officiating in the Premier League.

This was following the audio broadcast of VAR decisions during Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League on Monday night.

That was the first ever in any country such a decision would be taken during a football match.

The referee was asked by former Crystal Palace owner and football pundit Simon Jordan if in the future the good and bad decisions will be broadcast.

Howard Webb, who is also the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, PGMOL, said, “Of course.”

He said: “Last night was the first step. We’ve not heard this before anywhere, we’ve not seen it in any of the other big leagues where the VAR audio is being played out post-game in this way.

“We’re doing the next best thing by playing out afterwards which is a step in the right direction, we think.”
