The Manager, Regions Speech and Child Developmental Delay Clinic, Imo State, Chibuike Oti, has advised educationists to refer autistic children to specialists so that they can learn easily.

Oti made the call in an interview with The PUNCH as Nigerians joined others to mark the World Autism Awareness Day with the theme ‘Inclusive quality education for all.’

He added that the lives of autistic persons would be better if members of the society were educated on autism as well as how to care for and identify the children suffering from it.

Oti said, “Autism is a new word to many, except for parents who have autistic children or people who lived with them. Proper attention should be given to these victims by specialists who know how to handle autistic people.

“When a teacher notices such children in the class, they should not hesitate to refer them to specialists and specialist schools so they could be diagnosed and the challenge can be tackled so that they can learn easily.”

He explained that World Autism Awareness Day was a day set aside to celebrate autistic children and to create awareness.

He said, “Not everyone in the community knows about it, people get confused seeing children that suffer from this, and these children are denied essential needs.”
