Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has expressed surprise that Carlo Ancelotti opted not to start Antonio Rudiger in Real Madrid’s second leg semi-final of the Champions League against Manchester City.
Manchester City ended up beating the Spanish giants 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester to progress to the final of the competition where they will now face Inter Milan on June 10.
German defender Rudiger was a standout performer in the reverse fixture which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
The former Chelsea star held Europe’s in-form striker Haaland and stopped the Norwegian from scoring.
However, the Germany international was dropped to the substitutes bench for the second leg at the Etihad.
Ancelotti instead selected Eder Militao to partner David Alaba in defense, a decision that surprised Ferdinand.
“I am surprised Ancelotti [did] not start Rüdiger. I think to myself ‘has any defender done better vs Haaland this season?’ probably not. It’s a massive call,” he said.
The Norwegian has bagged 52 goals in 48 games across competitions but failed to score in the two-legged semi-final clashes against Los Blancos.
